WV in Retrograde
I am shocked that a man in prison received 40% of the democratic votes against President Obama in West Virginia. And Walt Helmick who doesn't know what end of a steer grass goes into or comes out of was elected Commissioner of Agriculture. No wonder we are in the shape we are in.

Re: WV in Retrograde
On the other hand, a number of excellent new faces have emerged indicating their willingness to serve our county in a leadership position. Christine Campbell offered an intelligent campaign that struck a note in the hearts of many individuals who believe in the future of Pocahontas County. Her opponent was almost undefeatable. Dolan has provided us all with a lifetime of unexcelled service. He has demonstrated honest and forthright leadership that generates trust and confidence in all of us. He is an exceptional leader that deserves every accolade the voters can bestow - and he ran a campaign that was honest and respectful of every one. An exceptional individual.
I was also glad to see Mr. Triplett considered for his party's nomination for Dolan's old job. Like Dolan, he is forever a gentleman, dedicated to public service and earns his pay by excellent service. Regardless of future outcomes, I am greatful for the opportunity to have known these two exceptional persons.
As for Mr. Obama's opponent -and perhaps other races as well - we all know that there are other factors at work. It is perhaps sad - but the final tally is not yet in. A lot can happen in 6 months.
We owe a debt of grattitude to every candidate that put their name in the hat for public consideration, and I woild like to thank them all, successful and unsuccesful candidates alike. It may yet turn out that those who were unsuccessful will be the most thankful for the outcome in the long run.

Re: WV in Retrograde
Martin, you continue to blame the voters and not those in office. Surely your third place finish as PA should be an indicator that the voters are tired of arrogant, holier than thou candidates and setting officials.

So who are you to criticize? You who wont even leave a name attached to your diatribe. Have you the gumption to run for office yourself? Will your yard sign have "no name" as a candidate? When you go through the process yourself then perhaps you'll see things differently or at least know what you are talking about.

Re: WV in Retrograde
Diatribe? I thought that's what this topic was, a bitter attack on the voters. You know, "diatribe" Martin. What you have spewed a couple times in the past month against the (anonymous) voters. Do you think that served you well in the election?
Who am I? Who am I......... well, that's a complicated question. Do want to know "Who" I am or do you just want to know my name? Who I am: I'm the same person that voted AGAINST YOU Tuesday. I voted Tuesday ANONYMOUSLY. What is your point?
My name? Well, that's none of your concern I think. If you knew my name, would it make a difference? What would you do? What good would knowing my name do? Your forum Martin, in the registration agreement, it said nothing about the user having to use his/her real name. Maybe you should re-write that, better explain it at least.
As to having the "gumption" to "run for office"? Haha! It's so much fun being on the other side of the polls. I get to witness the arrogant fall. Much like I did Tuesday. :)

Well let me be very clear. If I don't know who you are I just don't care what you have to say. Secret ballots are what we need in elections, but masked commentary reminds me of the KKK.

Re: WV in Retrograde
The realization that West Virginia Democratic Primary Voters cast 40% of their presidential nomination votes for a prison inmate is sinking into the media outlets, and hit the Washington Post today. I suspect it will be on O'Reilly tonight. No doubt it will be a media circus at the Democratic Convention when his delegates are seated and Fox news will publish their every word. The meaning of it all? Who knows? But it does seem sad that the character of West Virginia to the rest of the world will be shaped by these influences. Is revenge so sweet that its addiction prevents us from finding common ground and moving forward.
Revenge Politics - not fairness and common sense - is what seems to rule. Thank goodness that not all county races were determined by that rationale. I hope.

Re: WV in Retrograde
I understand Mr. Judd will have no delegates at the Convention because no one registered to be one. Also, he did the same thing in Idaho in 2008. He likes to mess with state election laws where the barrier to getting on the ballot is very low. It doesn't take much in WV. His return address was the prison in Texas. The WV counties that voted a majority for Judd, and there were several, are in coal country. This is a statement about opposition to the EPA and its regulation of the coal industry which is fomented and encouraged by the Governor and Joe Manchin. No doubt, opposition to the Presdent within the WV Democratic Party also has a racial element to it. Obama will lose WV by more than 10 points which will be no surprise given recent voting patterns. This incident is an anomoly that will play out in a few days and after Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert have had their fun mocking the voters of WV.

It is a comfort to know that we won't have to suffer through that twice. Thanks J.

Re: WV in Retrograde
Sorry for going twice in a row, but the very next E'Mail contained this message from a friend.
"I watched Good Morning America and CNN yesterday morning and WV was
front and center with this disgusting outcome. One commentator (who was Black) when asked what his opinion was, said not that WV is prejudiced, but, rather, that "those folks in West Virginia are just plain crazy!"
Well, Martin, does that match the campaign rhetoric you observed? What is the difference between being totally driven by "revenge politics" and being "just plain crazy." Sometimes it is a slim line. I say again,
"We owe a debt of grattitude to every candidate that put their name in the hat for public consideration, and I woild like to thank them all, successful and unsuccesful candidates alike. It may yet turn out that those who were unsuccessful will be the most thankful for the outcome in the long run."

Re: WV in Retrograde
I find it rather disheartening that the comics, and very little of the media, specified that 41% of the WV DEMOCRATS voted for the convict. I'm now lumped in with the "just plain crazy" crowd, and the option to vote for the convict didn't even appear on my ballot, although he may have swept the State if it had.
Upon release, I would expect nothing short of a victory lap around the State.

No. You do care Martin. Let's face that fact. If you didn't; you wouldn't respond at all. I'm not quite sure what your problem is with anonymity. You remind me of the Etater bullies. "Tell me who you are! Just tell me!!!" You work so hard to not be like them yet, you act exactly like them.

Re: WV in Retrograde
Actually you mistake annoyance with caring. I am annoyed for several reasons: 1. These remarks are hardly ever constructive and usually disparage and ridicule. Often they are pure slander. 2. Like a brick hurled through a window at night, the speakers don't own up to their words. Reasoned discussion, logical argument, impassioned pleas these are not. So I don't care until these speakers care enough to take the sheets off.

Re: WV in Retrograde
So........ you are comparing "disparaging" remarks with racial intolerance? You are claiming to know what it is to have a cross burned in your yard just because I challenged your ego a bit? It's a tangled web you weave Marty. Tangled indeed.
Let's be realistic here. I annoy you enough that you "care" to respond. That been said; knowing who I am wouldn't make you care any more. It would just give you further reason to dismiss my comments......... it would give you a name for your mind to reason out yet one more person to ignore and hell Marty; even hate!
No, see? The reason you were turned out to political pasture is not because of me. It's because of HUNDREDS like me! We voted you out Martin and the reasons why are quite clear to see. You are always the victim of the God awful bias in this county. Yet, you fail to see your arrogance. Your actions at the Commission meetings are absolutely atrocious. If you aren't acting like a 12 y/o trying not to fall asleep in class then; you're acting like a 13 y/o on her period. Pouting in the corner.......... head rested on your hand. Bored to tears.
Martin you act like you're above the people in the county. The very people that allowed you a term in the commission. And lets accept that Martin. The people you curse are the same ones that granted you near $40K a year for the past 3-4. We're not indebted to you Martin. You are indebted to US.

That is a common problem from what I have seen. Many have big egos and think they are all that and a bag of chips, when they are just the crumbs.
Marty Saffer is right – a bunch of LOSERS ran in the primary – some of the worst have been weeded out – now let’s hope that folks will indeed vote for the BEST candidates in November! So who cares what the tourists think, Pam, they don’t live in this county – they just come here to play at our expense!
It’s amusing that most county candidates DID NOT like having their past mistakes exposed instead of fess’n-up! They scream at those exposing the lies, thefts, rapes, swindles, and incompetence instead of accepting the blame themselves! The very purpose of ‘Muckraking’ is to expose the corruption of persons running for public office, and the corruption of those already in public office. After all, aren’t these candidates asking us to PAY THEM high wages for their time in office? So ask the following:
Is Walt Helmick qualified to be Commissioner of Agriculture when he doesn’t even know which end of a horse or cow eats grass? Or is Walt’s qualifications the simple fact that he is one of the highest-ranking Masons in WV?
Look at Dolan Irvine, he’s been paid in excess of $1.5 MILLION dollars in his career as County Assessor, plus who knows what else under the table – yet even now while facing certain death from terminal cancer – dear-ole-Dolan wants even more public funds to feed his greed! Add-up the NEPOTISM of his wife Alice plundering the Board of Education, and his other kinfolk living-off taxpayer money – the amount exceeds $5 Million++. In that respect, the Irvines have never had a buck that wasn’t taxpayer money – but Oh, Dolan’s a high-ranking Mason also, is he not!
Look at Robert ‘Bob’ Martin, he fled the county 25 years back after being shot-at for his crimes & misdemeanors as a local attorney, then after his fallout in Charleston, has now snuck back into the county to assist wannabe-sheriff-Jonese try and get rid of Donna Meadows Price – so beer-can-Bob can take over as prosecutor! Has Bob ever had a day without ‘larceny’ in his heart – is he too a Mason?
When you consider David Jonese and his recent term as Sheriff, his picture in the dictionary is right next the very word CORRUPTION! He is not and never has been concerned with his promise to “protect & serve”, all he has done is surround himself with thugs loyal to him – and NOT THE PUBLIC. That’s why his deputies have included thieves, rapists, liars and now want to hid behind black-face-masks when busting down the door of someone’s home! Have they forgotten that in WV it’s lawful to resist an unlawful arrest – up to and including shooting/killing the perpetuators? It’s just a matter of time – it always is!
Thank goodness Kenneth “Buster” Varner won his primary for Sheriff on the Democrat side of the ballot, and while he too is a Mason, at least he is a better person and candidate than Jonese! We can only hope that Buster will win the general election in November and relegate Jonese to the bone-yard where he can steal even more “rocks” from the public-water-way of Deer Creek!
But let’s be grateful, both Kathy Beverage & Jeff Taylor were defeated! Kathy’s sins against the public are myriad for violating of the Bill of Rights, failure to take continuing law courses, and back-dating legal documents & such. Good Riddance! As for Jeff, didn’t him & his wife & daughter beat-up a senior-citizen neighbor putting her in the hospital – while the police failed to investigate! And didn’t Jeff steal the woman’s registered puppy-boxer; sell it to a woman at Snowshoe who traded the dog for a debt to a man in Marlinton? Jeff then falsely accused his neighbor’s two puppies of killing eight-sheep over a ten-month period of time – BUT WITHOUT EVIDENCE! Remember the Taylors that January Sunday morning running in circles in their sheep-pen for almost 3-hours trying to spray red-paint (that Jeff took from Interstate) on their sheep in order to file a false claim!
